Project Overview

This large custom home designed by Shugarman Architecture + Design is strikingly minimalist and modern, with a bold presence outside and architecturally driven interiors. The carefully considered spaces capitalize on the city’s evocative natural environment, including dramatic views of the Bow River valley and the flood of natural light. The materials and finishes selected have an earthiness and a serenity which reflect the owners’ newfound desire for a minimalist lifestyle.

Our work needed to be as understated as possible — almost as if it weren’t there. As part of a handpicked team, we were tasked with crafting sleek, low-key cabinetry for the kitchen, pantry, dining area, office, master ensuite and walk-in closet.

Project Highlights

For the kitchen, which is an integral part of the open-concept great room, Shugarman interior designer Melanie Brant called for an unorthodox mix of finishes for the flat-front cabinetry. Key cabinets are done in an engineered wood chosen for its delicate tone and uniform wood grain, while others (the fridge, ovens and bulkhead) are finished in a soft white lacquered finish. The designer's aim was to make the kitchen less conventional, so she highlighted some forms in wood and let other surfaces blend into walls.

The rest of the millwork in the house was no less meticulous than the kitchen. For the office, we did all cabinetry in the lacquer finish with hidden storage components, and in the master ensuite, the vanity, bulkhead and built-in medicine cabinets were built in a engineered veneer from Australia for its even and subtle grain pattern. Despite the understated look, our work needed to be no less meticulously crafted or functionally sophisticated. Just the opposite: in a house of this quality, the expectation is that the millwork is crafted in lock step with the architecture and other trades.
